Who am I and what is this?

I’m Nate, an Aussie living in Narrm (Melbourne). I’m many things, but don’t really fit into traditional boxes. I describe my work as ‘practical sociotechnology ethics’. I draw on a number fields and disciplines. I’m a solo act but never work alone.

I’ve been a startup CEO. I’ve made a bunch of angel investments. I’m a senior advisor to governments, major corporations and research and policy institutes. Currently I spend my days helping (mostly large) institutions design trustworthy organisational structures.

This seems to be having a fairly positive impact, something I hope we’ll explore together as I publish.

I also used to write and speak professionally. After a hiatus, this right here is about me getting back my groove.

Why subscribe?

This is a hard nut to crack. The decision has to be up to you. But… If you’re open to hearing me out, here’s what I reckon I might be able to offer.

First reason to subscribe: Novelty

In a world with lots of noise and few signals, I’m betting aspects of my ‘transdiscipline’ (practical sociotechnology ethics) will help expose you to new, unique and useful ways of exploring problem and opportunity landscapes that matter to you and millions of others.

Specifically, we will explore how to design trustworthy organisations that are well positioned to help solve some of today’s most pressing problems.

Second reason to subscribe: Practicality

I’m concerned with thoughtful and considered action (it’s literally in my job title!). I have a strong feeling you are too. Other than a couple of introductory posts to help you understand the deeper me and how I got here today, my musings are focused on taking theory and putting it into practice in ways that materially change everyday behaviour.

My writing draws from the work I do out in the real world, so although I attempt to theoretically explore and ‘ground’ all that I do, what I bring to you is very much an IRL representation.

Real conversations, real problems, real solutions (sometimes), real failures and real learning.

Third reason to subscribe: Together we can have real world impact

Attributing something you do to a change out in the world, outside of tightly controlled experiments, is hard. We know that. But that doesn’t mean we can’t give it a red hot crack! I’ll share the actual effect of my work, as best as I can. I’ll also create the space for us to openly and compassionately explore the real world implications of how we learn and evolve together.

So, if you’re ready to take the plunge into a world where organisations are deliberately designed to exhibit the qualities of trustworthiness, and where those same organisational ‘features’ help make our experience in this life fundamentally better…
